What is the difference between a Generator and a Manifesting Generator in Human Design

A lot of Generators say that they resonate more with being a Manifesting Generator, and one of the reasons they name is that Manifesting Generators are typically described as multi-passionate, whereas Generators are described as focused on "the one thing".

In this blog post, I address why as a Generator you might be resonating more with being a Manifesting Generator and what is the real difference between these two types.

Generators can be multi-passionate

First off, let's start with debunking the myth that the only type that can have multiple passions is a Manifesting Generator. This couldn't be further from the truth. Just because Manifesting Generators are described as multi-passionate, doesn't mean that all the other types are not. So, let's set this straight right now.

Manifesting Generators and “the one thing”

The difference lies in how you approach being multi-passionate. Most Manifesting Generators judge themselves for being multi-passionate, they think that they should be able to focus on only one thing at a time and they live their whole life believing that there's something wrong with them, because they can't do it.

There's lots of trauma and judgement related to being a multi-passionate person for a Manifesting Generator. And when a Manifesting Generator discovers that this is how they are supposed to live, they feel a massive relief.

Generators and hitting a plateau

Generators, on the contrary, don't have any problem focusing on “the one thing”. If this "one thing" is working for them, they are likely not even interested in doing anything else. They only venture into multiple projects when they get bored or hit a plateau in their projects. And this is one of the main explanations of why they jump from one thing to the next.

When a Generator hits a plateau, they feel a lot of frustration because despite their efforts, things are not moving forward. The longer they stay on the plateau, the stronger is the desire to quit and start something new. However, if they quit too soon, they lose the chance to develop true mastery in that field and need to start all over again.

If you’re a Generator and this is your case, the best thing you can do when you hit a plateau is to ask for a sign on whether to keep going forward or to quit.

Generator's strategy - waiting to respond - applies not only when they start projects, but also when they quit projects, so when you are stalled and things are not moving forward, ask to be re-initiated and see what you are being guided to.

Any type can have multiple passions and multiple interests

Coming back to the topic of multiple passions, any type can have multiple passions and multiple interests. The difference between Manifesting Generators and Generators is that for Manifesting Generators, it's healthy to be involved in several things at the same time. They have the capacity and the energy to focus on numerous projects at the same time, with the same passion, depth and commitment. In fact, when Manifesting Generators are forced to channel all that energy into "the one thing", they burn out much quicker.

The opposite happens for Generators. Generators operate at their best when they can channel all their energy into “the one thing”. It's not healthy for them to disperse their energy, because this will only slow them down.

This doesn't mean that they can't have hobbies and other interests at the same time, but the majority of their focus, effort and commitment goes into one main project. When this project is completed, or doesn't require that much of their energy anymore, they can move to something different. So, for a Generator multiple passions happen sequentially, rather than simultaneously.

There’s more to you than a Human Design type

The third thing that needs to be said is that you are so much more than your Human Design type. Think about it. There are only 5 types in Human Design, meaning that “type” is the broadest distinction that you can make about people. Being a Generator or a Manifesting Generator basically means that there are approximately 2-2,5 billion people who are similar to you.

How similar are you to all those other Generators or Manifesting Generators? - Probably not too much. Because when we look at each individual chart, we see profiles, authorities, centers, channels, gates, planets, variables, incarnation crosses, circuitry, definition...

If you put all of that together, your Human Design chart becomes a pretty unique representation of your energetic archetypes. The chances of someone else having the exact same chart as you are slim to none. So, there's so much more in your chart than your type. Your profile, your energy centers, your definition, your defined channels and gates have as much if not more to say about your ability to stay focused on “the one thing” or be multi-passionate as your type.

Energy flow of Generators and Manifesting Generators

Another way to distinguish a Generator from a Manifesting Generator is by comparing their energy flow.

A Manifesting Generator is typically very fast (mechanically, we can see it reflected in a direct connection between a motor center and the Throat). Manifesting Generators can literally fly through life. When they start something, they do it fast, they skip steps often without even realizing it.

Generators, on the contrary, move step by step and they are typically very thorough. This doesn't mean that they are necessarily slow, and it doesn't mean that they are always behind the Manifesting Generators. In fact, sometimes Manifesting Generators are forced to go back and do or re-do some of the steps they skipped over, and this takes time and energy, whereas Generators just keep chugging forward step by step.

Generators sometimes wish they were faster, whereas Manifesting Generators typically wish that they were more thorough.

Imagine these two types considering the utility of a checklist. Generators would have a checklist because they would enjoy the ability to check things off and see how far they have come. Manifesting Generators, in turn, would enjoy it because it would help them stay focused on what needs to be done and avoid those frustrating moments when you realize that you missed something important, because you were galloping forward with so much excitement.

Conditioning patterns for Generators and Manifesting Generators

The final reason why a Generator can sometimes feel like a Manifesting Generator is the conditioning. There's a general obsession in our world with being the initiator and the starter of things, and having a "make it happen" attitude.

However, energetically, the only type that can truly initiate are Manifestors. Every other type needs to be initiated - either by responding to a situation, sign or a prompt (as a Generator or a Manifesting Generator), or by responding to the invitation (as a Projector), or by slowly developing clarity on what needs to be done (a Reflector).

A Manifesting Generator is as close to a Manifestor as it gets  - they both have the energy to start (a motor connected to the throat, even though a Manifesting Generator is not designed to initiate), and both have access to non-verbal creative flow. A Manifesting Generator, in addition, has the energy to follow through that comes from their defined Sacral Center.

So, in the eyes of many Generators, Manifesting Generators are the perfect type. And this is why there's a tendency to want to be like them - because our society admires people who can start and finish projects, and are fast and efficient. This is where conditioning comes from.

Embrace being a Generator

The key for Generators to realize is that they have their own unique energy and their role is not to be the one who rushes through life. Maybe they want it, but it's not really healthy for them, energetically speaking. A Generator is designed to enjoy life's pleasures, live in the moment and explore their own creative gifts. They are here to transform ideas into something tangible and enjoy the process of doing so, without the rush and the pressure to “get it done ASAP”. Once you get comfortable with your Generator energy, the desire to be some other type simply disappears.
