How to uncover your limiting beliefs in less than 30 minutes
Do you find it easy to identify your limiting beliefs?
Sometimes I feel that it's not as easy as it sounds.
Limiting beliefs are stored in our subconscious mind, and this means that most of the times we’re not even aware of them. We may even intellectually think a completely opposite thought, and never recognise that our deep belief is totally opposed to that.
For example, we may think that we deserve to be praised for a work well done, but in a moment of truth, we dismiss the praise and say that “I was lucky” or “It’s not a big deal”. Our actions speak of our beliefs louder than our consious thoughts.
So, how can we uncover our limiting beliefs?
An exercise to uncover our limiting beliefs
I’ll share with you one of the exercises I use with my clients to identify their limiting beliefs. Grab a pen and a piece of paper and set aside half an hour to do this exercise.
Before you start, let's get grounded. Sit with a back straight, plant your feet firmly on the floor and take a few deep breaths. Close your eyes and clear your mind. Now, open your eyes and make the following two lists.
- On one piece of paper, list all the things you’d love to have or experience in your life. Places you’d love to go. Projects you’d love to accomplish. Things you’d love to achieve. People you’d love to meet. Activities you’d love to try. Whatever comes to your mind. Don’t censor yourself, just write what you’d really really really want to see in your life. Dream as big as you like, the bigger are your dreams, the better.
- On another piece of paper, list all the reasons why you can’t have what you want. Don’t filter your responses, write everything your brain is telling you. These are the stories and beliefs that are limiting you.
I’ll give you an example.
Example of limiting beliefs
One of my clients dreamt of creating an online platform to support people affected by a certain medical condition. When we started discussing this dream, their mind got flooded by objections: “Who am I to give advice about it? I’m not a doctor, I can’t run such a platform! No-one would participate. People don’t talk about these things. I’m going to look ridiculous putting it out there. I've never done anything like this. I'm not an expert in online platforms” And so on an so forth…
See how easy it is for our mind to come up with explanations for why we shouldn’t even attempt going for our wildest dreams? It’s truly amazing how many beliefs we can unearth with such a simple exercise.
Try it yourself and let me know if it worked for you. And if you need support on working through these limiting beliefs, head over to my booking page and book a time for a complimentary call. I'd be more than happy to help you!
