What your Human Design chart can tell you about choosing your niche

The past couple of weeks we’ve spent talking about niching using Human Design. Last week we talked about how your Human Design type can help you choose the kind of niche or audience that is correct for you. Today, we’ll be talking about the other area of your chart that can help you decide.

Also, I invite you to read my earlier blog post on common mistakes made when deciding a niche or audience. I share with you my alternative process for choosing an aligned audience for your offerings, instead of the traditional model we’re often taught.

As always, it’s important to remember that there are many influences in your Human Design chart. This is not a hard science or a set of strict rules that you must follow. Use your strategy & authority to guide you, take what resonates with you and leave the rest!

Niching Influences in Your Human Design Chart

  • Your Human Design type, which you can read more about here
  • Your Defined or Undefined Energy centers, which is what we’ll be talking about today.

When it comes to your niche, your energy centers can tell a lot about what is a correct niche for you. If you want to follow along, you may want to pull up your chart! You can use my favorite calculator at this link to find yours for free.

But before we dive into the topic of niching, let’s make sure you understand the difference between defined & undefined energy centers.

Defined vs. Undefined Energy Centers

To learn more about energy centers in general, check out this blog post.

The energy in your defined energy centers is consistent & predictable. You’re familiar with it, and you always have access to this energy. This is where your innate gifts and talents lie, and if you express this energy in an aligned way, you are in your zone of genius.  This is your natural point of attraction!

The energy in your undefined energy centers is inconsistent and unpredictable. This is where you’re easily influenced by others. Whenever you come into contact with someone who has this energy center defined, you will be able to feel their energy very strongly. You’re attracted to people with defined energies in this center and you can sense it and experience it as yours!

Energy Centers & Your Niche

Whether or not your energy centers are defined or undefined can heavily influence your decision when choosing your niche/audience.

If you have an energy center that’s defined, you’ll naturally attract people who have this center undefined. This makes the skills related to your defined energy centers great topics for you to teach on and share with other people, since these are talents you naturally possess!

Your undefined centers are your sensors - this is where you can “read” the energy of other people, feel their moods, thoughts, stress level etc. These are the centers where we experience the biggest growth, as they typically represent our wants, our life struggles, and our major life lessons. If you’ve done the work and healed your wounds in your undefined centers, you can help others do the same by coaching them through the same struggles.

What’s the difference between teaching & coaching?

Before diving into the different energy centers, it’s important to understand the difference between teaching & coaching.

Teaching is explaining things from a place of knowledge & understanding from more of an outsider perspective. A teacher imparts wisdom to students and tells them “what to do”.

Coaching, in turn, is about witnessing the struggles of other people and supporting them through the healing process. It’s less about telling them what to do and more about guiding them to discover their own wisdom by reflecting their innate gifts and shedding light on the blind spots.

While of course you can teach on all possible things, your strongest and most natural teaching will come from your defined centers! Your undefined centers are areas where it’s easiest for you to relate to other people, thus making these stronger areas for you to coach on.

Let’s walk through an example birth chart

In this chart, we have the following energy centers:

  • Undefined centers = Head Center, Identity Center, and a completely open Root Center
  • Defined centers = Ajna Center, Throat Center, Emotional Center, Sacral Center, Spleen Center & Will Center

An energy center that is completely “open” or undefined means that the center itself & the gates within the center are not defined.

The Undefined Energy Centers

Completely Undefined Root Center

With a completely “open” root center, this person doesn’t handle stress very well. They have likely developed their own tools & systems for how to manage stress when everyone around them is freaking out, or how to get stuff done without stressing out. This is something they can definitely support their clients and customers with!

Aside from stress management, they can also coach their clients around topics related to connecting with nature, your natural cycles, time management and living in sync with the Universe.

Undefined Identity Center

With an undefined Identity Center, this means you’re a flexible person who struggles with defining yourself in a specific way. A common struggle of people with an undefined Identity Center is not knowing who you are. This is because you absorb the energy of other people around you and you relate to others in a profound way! When you’re with someone with a defined identity center, you behave like them. If you’re constantly becoming someone else, then it can be really difficult for you to figure out who YOU are.

Those with this energy center undefined are not meant to be defined by specific titles & descriptions. They can be everything and nothing at the same time. And this is a huge advantage! By having this center undefined, you can perceive when someone is lost & you know how to guide them back to their own path. You can coach people into rediscovering themselves, detaching from labels, and help people see that they’re unique and perfect as they are.

Undefined Head Center

With an undefined Head Center, you’re always inspired & you have a tendency to think about things that are not relevant. You’re someone who deals with overwhelm, mental anxiety, self doubt or anything that relates to the energy of “I’m not sure.” You’re constantly questioning yourself and trying to find answers to all the “how”, “what” and  “why” questions that pop into your mind. Managing these thoughts & this mental anxiety are great coaching points for this person to help others work through.

The Defined Energy Centers

Defined Ajna Center

With a defined Ajna, this person can teach systems, strategies, critical thinking & creativity. An example of this would be how to put systems in place so you don’t stress, blending this center with the open Root Center.

Defined Throat Center

With a defined Throat Center, you can teach people how to be visible & show up as their most authentic self. You know how to create things & speak about them with confidence,

manifest your truth and be open about your emotions. This person speaks with an emotional language, since these two centers are connected.

Defined Will Center

With the defined Will Center, this person can also teach people how to be disciplined, keep promises, and choose when to work & when to rest. Another skill you could teach is how to delegate!

Defined Sacral Center

If you have a defined Sacral Center, then you’re a Generator or Manifesting Generator that can teach people how to say “no” to things that are not right for you & how to commit to the right things. Strengths of the defined Sacral include using your power & energy in creative ways!

Defined Emotional Solar Plexus Center

Those with the defined Emotional Solar Plexus have a clear, defined emotional wave. This gives you the ability to teach emotional regulation skills. You can share the benefit of recognizing your emotional wave and teach how your emotions impact others. You can also teach people the process of understanding and regulating their own emotions.

Defined Spleen Center

When you have a defined Spleen Center, you can easily teach people how to connect with their intuition & to trust their own instincts. You can also teach people how to process their existential fears that are related to the splenic center.

As you can see, there is a lot of information in your Human Design chart that can be uncovered to help you find a niche that aligns with your unique energy. Each of these centers, whether defined or undefined, can be weaved together into a niche that is uniquely correct for you and only you!
