What to do if you don’t have clarity on your life vision?

When I started on my personal development journey 6 years ago, my biggest problem was figuring out the vision for my life.

No vision, no growth?

Back then all the gurus were teaching about the importance of having a vision, because without a vision you can't really set any long-term goals and if you don't set goals, then how are you supposed to grow in life?

I remember feeling like such a failure because no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get any clarity on what I wanted, let alone on how I wanted my life to look like 20 years down the road. Everyone seemed to have a pretty clear idea of what they wanted in life, except for me. I felt frustrated and disappointed, and I had no one to turn to for help.

So, I did what I thought I had to do - I took action. I set goals that looked similar to those I've been reading about and thought that if I just accomplish them, I'd somehow compensate for my lack of vision. What ended up happening was that I didn't really feel motivated to follow up on those goals and eventually I gave up on goal setting altogether. Can you relate?

The missing link

Looking back, I understand now why I wasn't able to get clarity on my life vision. Visioning requires us to dream big, to open up to the flow of inspiration, and to believe that our dreams are possible. And to do so, we have to drop all the "shoulds", all the expectations and all the limits that we've accepted as facts and allow ourselves to explore the impossible.

Meanwhile, I spent my whole life being a Good Girl, and doing what’s right. I didn't even question, who it was right for.

I couldn't dream, because all that conditioning was like scales on my eyes that prevented me from seeing anything beyond the daily grind.

When I realised that, I felt so relieved! Just because I didn't have clarity on my dreams didn't mean that there was anything wrong with me. It just meant that I wasn't ready to dream big yet. I needed to do some inner work first.

I didn’t know then that transformation is a journey and it happens in stages, and there’s no point in skipping ahead. If I knew it, I wouldn't have spent so much time and energy trying to figure out my life vision, or being so hard on myself for not “getting there”. I wouldn't have chased goals that are not even mine, I’d just focus on doing what needed to be done – clearing.

If you're in this place, know this: there's nothing wrong with you, you're right where you need to be. Clarity will come when you're ready.
