Presence and living with the unknown

We are creatures of habits. This is how our mind is built - it looks for certainty, efficiency and shortcuts. The faster and the easier is the road, the less energy our mind expends on thinking and figuring things out and the more energy is available for the body. It's biology.

When everything is certain and predictable, we live in the illusion of control. Our mind is happy - it knows what'll happen in a day, in a week and in a few months. There's nothing wrong with that per se, a sense of control of our life is what makes us feel safe and secure.

What happens then when we're thrown into the unknown?

This is when we actually realize that our sense of control is a mere illusion.

Our mind doesn't have the capacity to control life, because life is unpredictable and uncontrollable.

This can be a big FREAK OUT moment, or a moment of awakening. We're snapped back in to the present moment. The present moment that all the gurus talk about, when there's no certainty beyond the present moment and where everything is possible.

How we deal with this "awakening" is what matters.

We can go back into the unconscious state - ignore what happens and numb it out. Eat it, drink it and Netflix it.

We can fight it, resist it and complain about it. After all, why is this happening to us?

We can also accept it as it is. As if we have chosen it ourselves. Read that again. As if we've chosen it ourselves.

Acceptance of this moment is what gives us back our power. The power to create, the power to be and to live this moment in all its vibrancy. Scary and uncertain AF, and yet so full of life.

The lesson we're collectively learning right now is that our life is not about "going through this" or "getting to the other side". It's about allowing all experiences to take place - "the good" and "the bad", the joys and the sorrows, and not resisting them, because without the contrasts, we're missing out on life. And allowing there to be room for not knowing what will happen. Being present with what is. For our capacity to live and to create is in the now.
