One of the most common questions I get asked when I help people run their business in alignment with their Human Design is the following:
I have an undefined throat center. How am I supposed to market myself? Can I blog, advertise, or promote my services if my throat is undefined? I feel completely invisible online!
This is such a valid question and there are several things that need to be considered, so I decided to write a blog post about that.
In this blog, we will cover the following points:
- Throat Center energy and what does it mean to have an undefined Throat
- The general rule of thumb for all your life and business decisions - regardless of your type
- Invitation - when it is needed and when it is not needed
- The gates of the Throat Center
Throat Center energy
Throat center is a center of self-expression, and it relies on our desire to contribute something meaningful and tangible to the world. It's main function is manifestation through communication, expressing who we are, what we are thinking, what we are feeling, what we are creating or learning, what we know or want to contribute, and what we have seen or heard and can say to empower others.
72% of the population has a defined Throat Center. With a defined Throat Center, you have a consistent way of expressing yourself, and your expression is determined by the channels that connect your Throat Center to other centers.
28% of the population has an undefined Throat Center. If you have an undefined Throat Center, you don’t have a consistent way of expressing yourself, meaning that there are multiple ways of how you can express yourself.
Undefined Throat Center and Human Design types
Three Human Design types can have an undefined or fully open throat center:
Manifestors and Manifesting Generators always have a defined throat, and their Throat center is always connected to a motor - Heart, Emotional Solar Plexus, Sacral (not for Manifestors) or Root center (directly or indirectly), so they have lots of energy to communicate and when they are in a creative flow, their communication is very fluent and convincing.
Some Projectors and Generators also can have a defined throat, but no connection to the motor (so their Throat center can be connected to the Identity, Spleen or Ajna centers, but not to the Heart or Emotional Solar Plexus).
A completely open Throat Center means that there are no defined gates in the Throat center, meaning that the whole center is white and all the gates leading out of the center are also white.
Follow your Strategy and Authority - even if your Throat Center is defined
When working with Human Design, the starting point is always to look at your type, strategy and authority. This determines how and what you do in your life and in your business. If you want to read more about that, check out this blog post, but here's a brief summary:
Note that for the purposes of this blog post, I re-framed the strategies and linked them to taking action, which is what speaking and communicating is about.
Now, what does it mean when we talk about communication and self-expression?
It means that when you are thinking about communicating something, you need to act in alignment with your Strategy and Authority.
Notice that this is completely different from speaking because you think you have to do it, or because someone expects you to do it, or because you think that something will or won't happen if you speak, or because you think you will be more noticed / unnoticed if you do/don't. These are all the situations when we’re speaking from a place of lack or need, instead of overflow and inner knowing.
The desire and the wish to communicate and express yourself needs to come from your body, from your deep knowing that what you want to say is really what needs to come through you, not because your mind or someone else tells you that this is what you should do. And this applies to all the types, regardless of whether their Throat center is defined or not.
You don't need an invitation to your own spaces
One of the biggest and the most common misunderstandings about Human Design is related to waiting for an invitation. Even for Projectors, whose strategy is to be invited and recognized - this strategy mainly applies to situations when they need to interact with other people, or take action in other people's spaces. They don't need to be invited or recognised to post something on their own blog, IG feed, or their own platform. It's their "home" and they don't need to be invited into their own home, it's already theirs.
Projectors do need to be invited into a workplace, relationships, friendships, or to contribute to something (e.g. guest blogging, or podcast guest), because if not, their energy is so strong that they may bump into rejection, as people are not necessarily ready to be seen as projectors see them. This is just how Projector's aura works, and I will explain it in more detail in my future blog posts.
This also means that you don't need an invitation to share anything in your own space. So, if you have a blog, a podcast, or a social media profile - you don't need anyone's invitation to post there, it's your space, you own it and you can express yourself fully in that space. It doesn’t matter what type you are, or what are your center definitions. The only recommendation is to follow your Strategy and Authority.
All Throat gates are projected gates
Another thing to keep in mind is that all the Throat Center gates are projected gates, meaning that when we express this energy and venture into other people's spaces, or interact with other people - we all need to wait until we're invited or recognised, regardless of our own type or our center definition.
Again, this doesn't apply when we're in our own space doing our own thing. So, your blog, your IG account, and whatever other online platform you work on is your space and you don't need to be invited there. As long as you follow your Strategy and Authority, you're fine.
There's a good resource that I have found that covers the key notes of each of the Throat Gates, and you can access it here.
The wisdom of an Undefined Throat Center
Every energy center - be it defined or undefined - has the potential to be expressed in it's lowest (out of alignment) or highest (in alignment) form. If you are curious about that, definitely check out my Deep Dive into Your Energy Centers booklet - it includes lots of information on how to identify whether you're expressing a particular energy in it’s highest or lowest form, and learn the tips on how to deal with these energies in the best way.
With an undefined Throat, sometimes it's difficult to know beforehand what will come out of your mouth. People with an undefined Throat have the tendency to either speak too much, or not speak at all.
Speaking too much typically comes from an underlying belief that "If I don't speak, I won't be seen" or "No one will notice me if I don't speak up".
And not speaking at all typically is rooted in the belief that "I can't communicate well" or "I need to think what I will say".
The key with the undefined Throat is to trust that whenever you get the urge to speak (and you act in accordance with your Strategy and Authority), the right words will come out, you don't need to overly prepare and overly plan it, as long as your mind doesn't get involved in the story. Trust that your body (not your mind!) knows when is the right moment to share what you want to share, and don't overly stress about what to say. And always remember, if it's your platform - you decide when to speak. And if it's not your platform - wait until you're invited into an interaction.
Remember also that Human Design is not a prescription. Don't take what any Human Design expert - including me - tells you as a "rule to follow", especially if what they tell you feels constricting and limiting.
Human Design is about experimenting, it's not supposed to define you or limit you, it's supposed to help you to be more of who you are. If you feel limited or constricted because of something someone told you about your design, just discard it. Maybe it was not expressed correctly, maybe it didn't land correctly for you, maybe it's not the moment to get it, or maybe it's just plain wrong and doesn't work for you.
I always say to everyone I work with - take what resonates and leave the rest. Don't feel the need to follow anyone's advice, calibrate everything you hear or read and feel if it resonates in your body. Only you know what’s best for you. Trust yourself and you’ll be fine!
